When a Perodua Myvi caught fire this morning on Jalan Cheras, bystander Teo Chai Yong rushed to a nearby BHP petrol station for help. He little expected that his request for a fire extinguisher would be refused by the two BHP staff on duty and as his pleas fell on deaf ears, the Myvi’s female driver died as the car burned.

The Myvi in question was severely damaged in an accident involving a lorry and a Toyota Vios. According to Teo, he heard the Myvi’s female driver call for help while at the same time, a fire around the engine area was spreading. The accident occured at around 3.30 am, near the Cheras velodrome according to Bernama.

While making calls to the fire department and police, Teo made his way to the petrol station. His requests were denied, the staff claiming that the management did not allow the loan of fire extinguishers to the public. There were only two staff members at the kiosk, both locals.

“I was willing to leave my IC with the staff as a guarantee, but they refused,” said Teo.

Angered at the staff’s refusal to cooperate, he started yelling at the staff and said that if the victim died, they would be the murderers.

In retaliation, the staff instead threatened to report Teo to management as well as the police.

When it was clear he would not get any aid, he returned to the accident site.

By the time he returned, the fire had consumed the car along with its driver.

What saddens Teo is that he claims police at the scene said that the driver’s life could have likely been saved if a fire extinguisher had arrived in time.

According to a representative from the fire department, the accident claimed one life in total with two others in critical condition while another person, the lorry driver, was stable.

Update: The deceased’s identity was confirmed by police this morning – Florina ak Joseph, 27, a Sarawakian native and a student.


BHP government relations manager Abdul Kaiyum when contacted claimed that the BHP attendants refused to open the door for Teo as he was not ‘acting calmly’ when asking for assistance. Neither did they refer to their supervisor because it was past midnight.

In defence of the staff in charge, he said that the two of them previously had been attacked and beaten up by assailants while on duty at the station. Update: BHP clarified that there will be no formal press conference over the matter and has yet to release a formal media statement.

  …The Boy Who Cried Wolf is a story about a boy with the reputation for lying which makes it hard for people to believe him when he genuinely need help. NO.. Teo did not lie BUT this particular Aesop’s fable came to mind. For all those, a life was sacrificed… with helpless people having to witness and listen to her calls for help. Traumatic isn’t it?! With this… will we still not learn? Pointing fingers will not bring the deceased back…

  Dear Mr. GCross, In case of an emergency where there maybe loss life or limb involved, we have to give Mr. Teo an element if doubt if his case is genuin or not. If he is not a robber, the consequences maybe fatal as in this case.
  I am a medical personel, this is how we are trained. Even if the situation maybe dangerous, as long as the story that the person give which may involve loss of life and limb, we have to give help unless proven otherwise. If the case is true, we can be found guilty under the Medical Act. This is what we call humanity. By locking yourself inside safely even if someone being rob or in need of help outside is inhumane. Think if the victim is you or your family members.
  This kind of thinking only can happen in Malaysia, cause we are trained to be selfish. Take care of our belongings/save our own skin first irrespective if someone may die outside.

  After reading the full story carried by Komunitikini, I find the explanations given by the BHP Government Relations Manager dude disgusting and irresponsible. Are they trying to find more excuses and fabrications before they hold a press conference on Monday, 7 June? A fire extinguiser costs no more than RM125!!! Now I boycott ALL BHP petrol stations. Let’s do it to teach them responsibility and care for others. Alternatively, they should just close shop and go to another country where life is cheap.

Mangsa dikenali Slorina a/k Joseph, 27, yang tersepit hanya mampu melambai tangan meminta tolong sebelum Perodua Myvi dipandunya dijilat api dalam kemalangan kira-kira 3.25 pagi semalam. Pegawai Turus Siasatan dan Perundangan Trafik Kuala Lumpur, Deputi Superintendan Abdullah Roning, berkata kemalangan itu berlaku berhampiran jejantas Jalan Cheras susur bulatan ke Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan (PPUKM). Menurutnya, ketika kejadian sebuah Toyota Vios dinaiki seorang lelaki dan wanita dipandu laju dari Kajang ke pusat bandar raya. “Kereta terbabit dipercayai dipandu terlalu laju sehingga ia terbabas ke pembahagi jalan dan merempuh tiang lampu serta memasuki laluan bertentangan.
“Pada masa sama Perodua Myvi dipandu seorang wanita datang dari arah pusat bandar raya terus dirempuh kuat Toyota Vios terbabit yang melayang ke laluan bertentangan,” katanya. Menurutnya, lebih mengerikan apabila sebuah lori yang mengekori Myvi itu tidak sempat mengelak menyebabkan lori berkenaan merempuh kereta wanita itu.

“Rempuhan kuat itu menyebabkan Myvi terbabit remuk sebelum pemandunya tersepit di dalam kenderaan. Lebih mencemaskan apabila pelanggaran itu mengakibatkan kebakaran pada Myvi terbabit. “Mangsa yang ketika itu masih sedarkan dirikan diri cuba menyelamatkan diri namun kakinya tersepit. Akibatnya mangsa hanya mampu meraung dan menjerit meminta tolong,” katanya.

Difahamkan ketika kejadian orang ramai termasuk pemandu lori yang merempuh wanita terbabit cuba memberikan bantuan kecemasan namun api terlalu marak dengan cepat.

“Akibatnya mangsa hangus sebelum sempat bomba datang memadamkan kebakaran,” katanya.

Menurutnya, pada peringkat awal polis gagal mengenal pasti identiti pemandu wanita yang hangus 80 peratus tubuhnya. Malah, usaha mengenal pasti identiti mangsa turut menemui jalan sukar apabila nombor pendaftaran kenderaan terbabit hangus.

“Namun berdasarkan siasatan pada nombor casis kereta itu, polis dapat menjejak pemiliknya iaitu lelaki yang menetap di Melaka yang meminjamkan keretanya kepada seorang lelaki yang menetap di sini. “Siasatan lanjut mendapati dia adalah teman lelaki mangsa yang meminjamkan kereta itu dan dia bergegas ke PPUKM bagi mengesahkan identiti mangsa,” katanya.

Sementara itu, katanya, kereta Toyota Vios dinaiki dua mangsa dikenali Chen Yoke Xing, 24, dan Chong Kar Jun, 17, adalah pelajar sebuah kolej dandanan rambut.

“Mangsa yang terselamat dilaporkan kritikal di PPUKM selepas cedera di kepala. Pada masa sama polis masih menyiasat sama ada pemandu Toyota Vios terbabit dalam keadaan mabuk ketika kejadian,” katanya yang kes itu disiasat mengikut Seksyen 41 (1) Akta Pengangkutan Jalan 1987 kerana cuai.

this morning approx 3.20am, at Cheras Tmn Pertama roundabout,

saw a freak accident, involving a Vios, Myvi and a Lorry.

im one the first badge who arrive, mean it just happen maybe seconds ago.

Vios believe to be turtle and badly damaged. When im passing by the vios, rear passenger started to pull out the front driver and front passenger.

then when i pass the Myvi, the car was totally sardine. Heard one girl was yelling cos piined inside. I stop my car then run towards the myvi to offer a hand while calling 999 emergency line to request for ambulance and bomba.

then saw fire spark at the engine bay of myvi. while still on the phone with emergency line to provide more details, i run back to my car and drive to BHP station which is just less than 500m away from the scene.

then i request for the fire extingusher from the attendant which is kept inside. There was 4 extingusher on the ground. But the attendant refuse to pass to me.

the BHP attendant claimed dat the door cant be open.

then i shout at him, i need it! i want it! someone is pinned inside the car and its started to burn!

then the BHP attendant keep repeating he kenot borrow and open the door.

then i was like WTF! if ur kiosk is burning can u come out? then he replied yes.

then he still say he kenot open the door. Then he say his boss wont allowed to borrow. WTF!!!

then i started to amuk kicking the kiosk and punching the glass of the kiosk.

i even throw my IC to him say that if im dun return u report police.

i saw i borrow.. if i use it i will pay for it. then he keep on just smile at me.

then he ask another partner to come out. Then i start shouting and yelling at them with bad words saying dat if the girl dies you two are the murderer.

then the 2nd BHP attendant shout back at me.

i demand for their names, i told them i would complain bout them,

then the 2nd attendant copy down my number plate and said that all my acts been recorded on CCTV and he gonna report to police tumoro. I challenged him.

then i drove off back to the scene.. the car was totally burning and the poor girl was burn alive inside.

then i spoke to the Bomba and PDRM how many casualties was inside. they told me one girl.

Then i spoke to PDRM about the incident happen in BHP.. then the policemen also scold with anger WTF with them.. if i could get the fire extingushier.. the girl might be saved.

then the Policemen ask me to go police station to report a cover about the BHP, and he assured me that the stupid BHP wont get to report on me.

Personally i would like to ask, how much does 4 fire extingusher cost? isit more expensive than a life?

would like to ask the BHP petrol station's boss! u cant afford to lose 4 fire extingusher then u better closed down your station!!!! Fuck you boss!!!!

and this is to BHP MALAYSIA!! seens your procedure to keep all safety gadget inside the kiosk... if anything happen during refueling... is your attendant gonna open the door to help? seens he claimed that the door cant be open after hours??
